WELCOME TO Mrs. KOBELKA'S WIKI

Hi Everyone!  I have enjoyed your children so much this past year and am enjoying the growth that they are accomplishing as a reader and writer.  It is amazing to see their progress.   I predict in 2012 they will grow leaps and bounds once more.  It is such a pleasure to be apart of such enthusiastic learners.

Thank you for taking the time to work with them at home.  It is evident to see that you have been working with them.  I am in the process of testing them again and just the few that I have tested have shown tremendous growth.  It is very exciting to witness!

Thank you to all the parents and grandparents for coming to Sungro to tie skates.  It is a big help and the kids get more skating time that way.  The kids are becoming more confident skaters, practice makes perfect.  If you have time, it would be great for your child to practice outside of school.  There are public skate times at Sungro and they have an outdoor rink where you can go whenever it suits you.  We have some hockey players in our class that zoom by everyone because they get ice time twice or three times a week.  There will be no skating on March 12th as indicated in your newsletter.  I am trying to book a skating slot for March 23rd, but I will let you know if that is possible.  Our last skating session will be on Thursday, March 22nd from 2 to 3pm.  We will be going with Mrs. Hlady's grade 3/4 class.  Hopefully there will be some parents to help us tie skates and you might want to bring your own skates as well.  Looking forward to our last class skating experience!

Your child may come home this week and talk about the illustrator and author Barbara Reid.  We have been studying her books and her fasinating way of showing her illustrations.  The work she does with plasticine is amazing!  We are starting our own plasticine illustrations.  If you are ever in the school, drop into the library.  Your child's amazing Barbara Reid inspired illustrations will be on display.  You may want to ask your child which Barbara Reid book is their favorite.  There are definitely many to choose from.  Check out our Barbara Reid inspired illustrations in the library.  They are on display for everyone to enjoy!

We will continue to study authors.  Robert Munsch is what we are studying at the moment.  He is a non fiction children's author who takes real life stories and expands them in a comical way that students enjoy reading and listening to.  His illustrator is Michael Martchenko who is also very talented and brings out the characters with real zesto.  You may want to explore his work further in the public library in town or look him up on the internet.  He has been a guest at the children's festival in past years and could potentially be one again.  The Children's Festival at the Forks takes place usually in June, so if you are interested you could check to see if he will be one of the guest artists this June.

In Science, we are working on Properties of Solids. Liquids and Gases.  You might hear a few facts from your eager learner.  Also, in French we are learning the different colors.  The students are working on making their own color books that they can read to each other and hopefully bring it home and read to you or their siblings.  Should be interesting on how they do.  In Literacy we will be talking more about the editing process.  Students have been writing stories with enthusiasm.  There have been quite a few "authors" reading in the author's chair after Daily 5 time.  You can just see the pride...Our spelling program is moving along steadily.  The grade 1's loved to be a part of it as well.  The grade two's have been very keen and have been doing very well.  The home reading program is working nicely.  I hope all reading bags do come home everyday.  Once they come home on the Monday or Tues. please keep them at home and then send them back on the next Monday.  At times, I may find a reading bag tucked into a locker when it should be at home.  In Math, we are covering many concepts during our daily Math Jobs and calendar time.  The field trip to the WSO was amazing.  The students thought it was great.  Thank you to Mr. Small for volunteering to come as a chaperone
